3. From Nothing to Cosmos (four DVD set with The Workbook +)

This DVD series featuring Fr. Robert J. Spitzer S.J., Ph.D. is a full treatment of topics concerned with the evidence for God from contemporary science. It covers the topics in Science, God and Creation in greater depth and detail. It also covers six topics not treated in Science, God & Creation:

i. Why the occurrence of our universal constants and initial conditions cannot be explained by the contention that “Our universe is just here.”

ii. How can the bible and science be reconciled?

iii. What can Catholics believe about evolution?

iv. How the human desire for the five transcendentals (perfect and unconditional Truth, Love, Justice/Goodness, Beauty, and Being) indicates the presence of a transphysical soul.

v. Why belief in an unrestricted, absolutely simple, pure power (i.e. God) is a more rational explanation than naturalistic explanations (multiverses, pure chance, etc.) to explain universal fine-tuning.

vi. What about aliens?

Approximately four hours duration (four DVDs). This dynamic presentation (with The Workbook +) can be used for a four part presentation (or more as you see fit for your parish / group needs) in parishes as well as an eight part reflection for home study groups. Answers to the most frequently asked questions can be found in The Workbook +. QR codes are used extensively for additional resources at your finger tips. All you need is a smart phone or tablet with a Qr / bar-code reader app (there are many of these apps free in the app stores).

5. Happiness, The Series

HAPPINESS, THE SERIES – $39.95

Aristotle said, “Happiness is the one thing you can choose for itself – everything else is chosen for the sake of happiness.” In this one phrase, Aristotle reveals how our happiness is affected by our view of ourselves, our success and our purpose in life. Seeking happiness controls what we pursue in life and career – and who we choose as our friends and spouses – just about everything we believe and hold dear. How do we find true happiness? Fr. Robert Spitzer has devised a program called “The Four Levels of Happiness” which helps us better understand our options for happiness and purpose in life – and to recognize the traps and pitfalls of delaying decisions, and selecting unwisely. In these 7 episodes, participants will encounter the major ideas and principles underlying their happiness – as well as its two related issues – transcendent eternal life and the purpose of suffering. Two lively young narrators – Eric Johnson and Jennifer Milani – help to interpret world-renowned experts who provide contemporary evidence for God, the soul, the resurrection of Jesus, and the purpose of suffering. An illustrated, user-friendly Study Guide is also available with summaries, study questions, definitions, biographies, and references. Watch Episode One here for free.

happiness2_2Product Description:

This 7-episode video series is designed to answer the most fundamental questions affecting our lives — our happiness, purpose, dignity, and sense of destiny:

1. What is happiness — and how can we be optimally happy?
2. What makes life worth living — and even optimally worth living?
3. Do we have a transcendent eternal soul through which God calls us to himself?
4. Why does God allow suffering — and how can we suffer well?

The authors of this program selected world-renowned experts in these four areas to present the most contemporary scientific, medical, psychological, philosophical, and theological evidence to answer these questions. These interviews are framed within an accessible dialogue between our upbeat hosts.  They help explain the experts’ major points and principles. An illustrated, user-friendly, Happiness, The Workbook is also available with summaries, study questions, definitions, biographies, and references.

Interviewees include: Eduardo Verastegui, Dr. Gary Habermas, Dr. John Lennox, Leah Darrow, Dr. Jan Holden, Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, John Chavez and our own Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D.

HAPPINESS, THE WORKBOOK – $12.95

happiness_workbookProduct Description:

This workbook is designed to accompany the video series, Happiness, The Series. That said, it could be used on it’s own to get a solid basic understanding of how important happiness is in our lives. So many of us have no real idea of how to achieve lasting, pervasive happiness. What makes you happy? Perhaps, like Fr. Spitzer, a good bowl of linguini does the trick. How about 3 hours later? Still happy?

How do we keep the happiness “buzz”? St. Theresa of Avila once said, “There are no sad saints”. H’mmm, that follows along the path of Fr. Spitzer’s Four Levels of Happiness. Start with Linguini and aspire to… well, you’ll have to check it out for yourself. Examine Lesson One here for free.

There are 7 Chapters in the workbook, each corresponding to a DVD episode. There are time stamps in the workbook to tell you exactly where you can find particular spots in the video. This series should be a must for every high school student and their parents. High school and above.

6. Happiness, Suffering, and the Love of God

HAPPINESS, SUFFERING, AND THE LOVE OF GOD – $49.95

Happiness, Suffering, and the Love of God provides answers to some of life’s most vexing questions and dispels many popular misconceptions as it guides us towards authentic and lasting happiness. For those who believe Happiness and Suffering are incompatible, this series of lectures by Father Robert Spitzer has the ability to change lives. Each of the five DVD episodes (shown below) is approximately one hour (episode 5 is 71 minutes). We also produce a workbook, meant to accompany the videos for enhanced retention and reference.

Magis CenterProduct Description:

1. The Four Levels of Happiness
2. Human Transcendence and the Soul
3. The Resurrection of Jesus and Jesus’ Revelation of God’s Unconditional Love
4. Why Would an All-Powerful, All-Loving God Allow Suffering?
5. How to Suffer Well

This series is well suited to upper level high school students, university students and adult parish group studies.

We often seek happiness and find suffering instead. Though happiness is our goal, most people don’t know what they are really looking for. In this video series, Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J. explores happiness in the revealing light of human transcendence and immortality. Beginning with the commonly held principle that different forms of happiness correspond to different fundamental human desires, Fr. Spitzer guides viewers through four distinct but related sources of happiness (pleasure, achievement, contribution, transcendence), showing how they form a hierarchy and explaining why only the highest level (transcendent happiness) will ultimately fulfill us. Fr. Spitzer explains why an unconditionally loving God would allow suffering and offers guidance on how to suffer well.

II. Resources for Confirmation Retreats

1. Confirmation Retreats for Ninth and Tenth Graders (The Reason Series – three resources)

The Reason Series (5-DVD set) has been used effectively on confirmation retreats. Directors of the retreats have shown the DVD’s on the morning, afternoon, and evening of the first day, and on the morning and afternoon of the second day. If retreat directors are concerned about five DVD’s being presented during the retreat and wish to reduce the number to four, we would recommend not showing DVD#1, and beginning with DVD#2. Retreat directors may want to ask someone from the parish who has an interest in science and philosophy (such as a scientist, engineer or teacher) to help facilitate discussion of the DVD’s during the retreat. The evidence of a beginning of the universe, the fine-tuning of the universe, and near death experiences galvanizes the students’ belief in the existence and presence of God during the retreat and makes the retreat quite vital and spiritual. It has lasting effects throughout their lives.

Why this program should be used in confirmation retreats:

The Reason Series provides vital information to students who may believe that science and faith are irreconcilable or who are experiencing skepticism about their faith. The faith of young adults is being progressively undermined by half truths. Our young people are in serious need of a defense of their faith that is both contemporary and scientific – otherwise they may fall victim to the false claims and misimpressions created by an increasingly secular society. The 2012 PEW Survey of the Religious Landscape of America indicated that the number of young people declaring themselves “Nones” (agnostics or unbelievers) has doubled in the last five years. It is likely to redouble in the next five years. Confirmation programs are frequently the last chance that the Church has to give some adult faith formation to students who are going to public high schools and universities. If we do not give them some means of defending their faith in this context, they are not likely to get it at all.

Description of The Reason Series: The Reason Series is a five-part comprehensive, age appropriate program designed to empower teachers and catechists to provide students the evidence they need to be more certain about a transcendent, super-intelligent, creative power – God. Based on the award-winning book, New Proofs for the Existence of God: Contributions of Contemporary Physics and Philosophy by Fr. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., The Reason Series follows college freshman Joe as he learns to defend his faith from his atheistic roommate, Tyler, with the help of physics and philosophy grad students, Dan and Alana.

Topics Treated:

i. Why can’t science disprove God?

ii. The evidence for a beginning of the universe (or any multiverse) from the Borde-Vilenkin-Guth Proof.

iii. The evidence for a beginning of the universe from entropy.

iv. The evidence for supernatural design from universal constant’s and the initial conditions of the universe.

v. The evidence for survival of human consciousness after bodily death (from medical studies of near death experiences).

vi. How can the bible and science be reconciled?

vii. How can Catholics subscribe to evolution?

viii. Why is Jesus Christ significant?

ix. How can evil and suffering be reconciled with a loving God?

The three resources in The Reason Series:

1. A 5-DVD set covering the topics mentioned above.

2. A Faculty Resource Manual to support the DVD presentations.

3. A Student Workbook to support the 5-DVD set.

A. The Reason Series (5 DVD Set) – $29.95

THE REASON SERIES - FIVE UNIT DVD SETCatechists and confirmation teachers may use these DVD’s on retreats or in catechism classes. The retreat setting is better suited for it because students have time to reflect on the material without long separations between classes. This series could also be used as a “take-home” project during the confirmation program. It has even greater effect when parents and students watch the program together and discuss it. The science in the DVD’s is quite contemporary, and biographies of physicists and references are given in the Faculty Resource Manual. Each DVD contains oral and written summaries and many engaging graphics within the dramatization. It is filmed at Mt. Wilson Observatory, and on college and high school campuses.

2. Confirmation Retreats for Eleventh and Twelfth Graders (Science, God & Creation – two resources)

Some confirmation programs will have students from 11th or 12th grade (or perhaps in college). We recommend the 1 hour and fifty-five minute DVD presentation by Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. for the confirmation retreat to cover the material on faith and science for these older students. The program is described in I.1 above – Resources for Adult Faith Formation (#1). There is also a comprehensive study guide accompanying the DVD presentation with questions and answers as well as quotations, references, and biographies of major scientists who discovered the evidence. The study guide is also described above. The DVD and the study guide are inexpensive so if confirmation programs do not intend to use these resources during retreats or classes, they may want to recommend it for home use by both students and parents.

3. Confirmation Retreats for Ninth through Twelfth Grades  (Happiness, The Series – two resources)

HAPPINESS, THE SERIES – $39.95

Aristotle said, “Happiness is the one thing you can choose for itself – everything else is chosen for the sake of happiness.” In this one phrase, Aristotle reveals how our happiness is affected by our view of ourselves, our success (status) and our purpose in life. Seeking happiness controls what we pursue in life and career – and who we choose as our friends and spouses – just about everything we believe and hold dear. How do we find true happiness? Our high school students need to seriously engage this question in order to make sense out of their lives, their studies, and themselves. Fr. Robert Spitzer has devised a program called “The Four Levels of Happiness” which helps students (and teachers) better understand their options for happiness and purpose in life – and to recognize the traps and pitfalls of delaying decisions, and selecting unwisely. In these 7 episodes, students will encounter the major ideas and principles underlying their happiness – as well as its two related issues – transcendent eternal life and the purpose of suffering.

If you are leading a Confirmation retreat, you really should include this material. Recognizing that 7 DVDs is probably too much for a weekend retreat, if you select Episode 1 that focuses on finding true happiness (using Fr. Spitzer’s, Four Levels of Happiness) and then share Episode 7 that responds to the atheist’s claim that God causes suffering, these 2 episodes can have a life altering affect on your students (and, very likely, the staff).

Two lively young narrators – Eric Johnson and Jennifer Milani – help students interpret world-renowned experts who provide contemporary evidence for God, the soul, the resurrection of Jesus, and the purpose of suffering. An illustrated, user-friendly Study Guide is also available with summaries, study questions, definitions, biographies, and references. Watch Episode One here for free.

III. Resources for Catechists and Young Adult Youth Ministers

In dioceses where confirmation typically takes place in the 10th grade, catechists may be looking for material that will have a high impact in the lives of students in the 11th and 12th grades. The programs on faith and science and Happiness, Suffering, and the Love of God, are two of the most high impact programs the students can watch. They answer the questions about evidence and proof for God from science as well as why an all-powerful, all-loving God would allow suffering in the world. The first curriculum is available now and the resources can be ordered below. We anticipate that the second curriculum will be available by November 2015.

1. Cosmic Origins (documentary 50 minutes)

COSMIC ORIGINS - DVDThis documentary, featuring eight world renowned physicists, is described in I.2 above. It is an excellent complement to both The Reason Series (for 9th and 10th grade) and Science, God & Creation (for 11th and 12th grade).

Possibly saving the best for last, this series is ideal for upper level high school students. It is Fr. Spitzer lecturing so the ideal method of use would be to watch short segments and then stop for discussion. This is certain to bring about a great deal of discussion and that is what we strive for. This presentation will combat the popular secular myth that science has proven God does not exist. The evidence is all on our side. Be sure to get The Workbook + so you can answer the questions that are sure to arise.
